Eye Examination

Whether you wear glasses or not, regular eye tests are important. This is because at Visionwise, we do a comprehensive eye health check as well as test for the need of glasses. Regular checks are important as they can pick up early signs of eye diseases such as Macular degeneration, Glaucoma, Cataracts etc. Early intervention is always key and increases the likelihood of success with treatment.

We carry out an eye exam for £37.50 or for free if under the NHS. We also have an option for a more comprehensive health check which includes retinal photography and OCT 3D scan which has an extra charge of £25.

Based on your requirements, we will allocate up to 30 minutes for your appointment, whereas other opticians only allocate 20 minutes. This is to ensure each individual patient has a tailored eye exam to meet their needs.

How often should one have an eye examination?
Everyone should have a regular sight test, but how often is recommended?  The NHS guideline is as follows:

National guidelines for eye tests

1: Aged 15 years or below - every year
2: Aged 16 – 69 years - every 2 years
3: Aged 70 years and over - every year
4: Diabetic and Glaucoma patients - every year
5: Aged 40 years or over with an immediate relative with Glaucoma - every year

Your Optometrist may recommend a different interval between tests based on their findings.  You will always be told when you should return for your next sight test, and we will let you know when you are due via your preference of a text or letter.

Note: the NHS will not fund early sight tests without reason.  If you are unsure if you are entitled to have an NHS funded sight test, please contact one of our practices and we will be able to advise you accordingly.
